John Francis Wade's manuscript "Cants Diversi" was written in 1751 containing the music,  which was first published in Samuel Webbe's "An Essay on the Church Plain Chant" in 1782. The text was published for the first time in the 1760 edition of Evening Offices of the Church. Frederick Oakeley translated it.

With time, "Adeste, Fideles" became a standard "official" song in most universities in the West. In the last few decades, though, it has become less and less used by higher education institutions, as humans accumulate more and more material possessions, detached themselves from nature,  one-another,  and their Father God.
